Handmade bags
The beautifully embroidered portion of the Bags and Purses, found here, was originally part of a Mayan woman's traditional blouse known as a huipil (we peel); on larger items you will find part of the collar of the huipil! Some Huipils are worn for more than 5 years and then are traded or sold. The fabric used for huipils are woven on back-strap looms and then hand embroidered according to their village traditional design. The skirts of the traditional Mayan dress, called cortes, (colors and textures varying from the village), are made on foot looms and are also recycled and reinvented into our product line. Many of our purses and bags are made of these one of a kind second hand traditional blouses and skirts and the accompanying straps or belts.
